ABOUT
Scanimated Scenes -dining table- is an interactive installation that reveals hidden animation within the stillness of a dining table. At the start, sequential photographs of the viewer are taken. These images are processed into a scanimation composite—a single image containing all frames, vertically interlaced. An AI image model then transforms this composite into dining table motifs: cutlery, napkins, plates—rendering the encoded motion invisible to the naked eye.
The resulting image is displayed on a large screen that resembles a dining table. It appears as an ordinary table setting. But when the viewer places a physical slit filter over the screen, the table comes alive: the motifs begin to shift and move. The viewer’s own captured gestures play back through the objects on the table, animated by the optical principle of scanimation.
The work draws on a phenomenon we occasionally encounter—peering through a fence and noticing that the scene behind it seems to move. Scanimation exploits this effect: by viewing vertically striped images through a matching slit overlay, static images produce the illusion of motion. Here, this principle is embedded within a familiar domestic context, transforming a table setting into a hidden animation device.
The role of AI is central but not apparent to the viewer. Stable Diffusion does not generate content from nothing—it translates existing visual information (the scanimation composite of the viewer’s body) into a different set of forms (dining table objects), preserving the encoded motion while disguising its origin. The AI acts as a translator between visual forms rather than a generator of new imagery.
By hiding animation within ordinary objects, the work invites viewers to reconsider the potential for motion lying dormant in the stillness of everyday life.
